The Event:
The earthquake that struck Jabalpur and its surrounding areas on the 22nd of May 1997 at 4.22 hrs, was one of the major earthquakes. It was centered about 8 km southeast of the city of Jabalpur (epicenter 23.18·N 80.02·E) in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India and measured 6 on the Richter Scale.
The maximum damage was noticed in the districts of Jabalpur and Mandla where 39 people lost their lives and 2421 were injured in house collapse. About 8546 houses collapsed, rendering 15,000 families homeless. About 52,690 houses were badly damaged and 3,06,400 houses were partially damaged. In all, 887 villages (or equivalent) were affected.
