The Event:
The massive earthquake that shook the state of Gujarat on the morning of January 26, 2001, India’s 51st republic Day, measured 7.6 on the Richter scale was one of the two most deadly earthquakes to strike India and will be remembered as one of Gujarat’s worst. The epicenter was 76 km east of Bhuj, the northern province of Gujarat and seismic activity was felt across most parts of India and Pakistan. The towns of Bhuj and Bachau were turned into rubble and severe damage was caused on Anjar. Rapar, Gandhi dham, Ahmedabad city, Morbi, Jodiya and Dhrol. About 7633 villages in 21 (out of 25) districts of Gujarat were affected to varying degrees.
