Scale of disaster: ~1400 dead, 1 Lakh rendered homeless & extensive damage to property.


The Event:
Earthquake struck our country in the state of Jammu and Kashmir on the 8th October 2005 at 9.20a.m. It measured 7.4 on the Richter scale. The areas that were worst affected in the state were those of Uri and Tangdhar in Baramulla and Kupwara districts. There was extensive damage to life and property. The area has a difficult topography and giving aid was not easy.
